Pokémon Black and White Japanese sales update

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

It has been almost three months since Pokémon Black and White first launched in Japan and sales for the games are still going strong. Pokémon Black and White Version were the fifth biggest selling game in Japan between November 22nd and November 28th 2010, quite impressive considering they have been around since September 18th.

43,227 copies of the games combined where sold within that week period bring the total amount of sales up to 4,494,106. With Christmas looming ever closer, we can expect a spike which could potentially take things up to five million. Pokémon Black and White Version are the fastest selling Nintendo DS games ever with over 1.7 million copies pre-ordered in Japan before the titles were even released.

With a launch in Australia, Europe and the US expected before March 2011, the worldwide sales are sure to be record breaking, according to Nintendo Power magazine in America, Black and White are one of the most anticipated titles of 2011. Despite the Nintendo 3DS launching in March, it doesn’t look like the titles will be overshadowed at all as the anticipation continues to build with the recent official website launch.

Sunako would make an awesome mecha commander

Summary:

No this isn't a hentai

With the villagers attacking her, Chizuru reminisces about her past. After one last ditch effort to kill Toshio, Ookawa steps in and pins Chizuru down while Megumi’s dad kills Chizuru with the good doctor’s stake. With Chizuru dead, Toshio lays out his plan of attack for the rest of the villagers. After reassuring them that the only way to kill the Shiki is to cut off their blood supply, he rallies the townspeople to also fight with him. A few predictably bail when they realize they may have to kill dead relatives, but most stay with Toshio.

The Takumi clothes parade continues

Takumi quickly relays Chizuru’s death to Sunako who’s with Seishin at the mansion. It seems Seishin is weakened for some reason and refuses to eat as well. Sunako instructs Takumi that they cannot flee and must make their stand, and to prepare for it.

Hi, I'd like to apply for a job at Bakuman

Me too Me too!

Meanwhile as the rest of the Shiki learn that the villagers have finally found them out they start panicking. Megumi is hounded by Masao to run away but she will have none of it, as she knows that they cannot survive outside of the village. Tohru tries desperately to get Ritsuko to attack her friend for food, but she steadfastly refuses. Meanwhile Kaori is hiding out with her dog at home convinced that Megumi may attack her at any time, but instead is attacked by her father instead whom she beats down.

To be fair, I wouldn't eat her for food either…

BLECH!!!

Meanwhile Atsushi goes out on his own to attack the doctor in order to avenge Chizuru’s death, but no one’s home at the clinic as dawn nears.

All good vampire shows must have villagers attacking a castle with torches

As dawn nears, we learn of the real reason why Seishin is so weak, as Tatsumi uses him for a quick powerup, while also asking him to protect the soon to be sleeping Sunako from the oncoming villagers. With day finally there, the villagers attack the funeral home, the Ebuchi clinic, and the Kanamasa mansion. While they are able to hunt down a few shiki, they discover that for the most part, most of the shiki have already fled.

Reaction:

And so the counterattack finally begins. Although I knew this moment was coming for a long time, I was still somewhat surprised that so many villagers actually joined Toshio’s side. I guess once the momentum was built up, it was impossible to stop, but I really thought that more people would bail out of fear or out of not wanting to ‘hurt’ their ‘dead’ relatives. Still this is just the first battle, and there’s still a bunch of episodes remaining.

It’s quite refreshing after a ton of really annoying episodes where everyone was so ignorant that something big is finally happening. In a way I think we can all feel a bit of Toshio’s relief at all of this, but I really think that him not telling them everything (i.e. use religious artifacts, people who get blood sucked don’t die instantly and can be hypnotized) will be a huge mistake.

Megumi’s beatdown of Masao was absolutely awesome. Probably one of the most hilarious moments of the show as she questions everything from his ability to do division to his ability to use chopsticks. LOL what a girl. There’s definitely much more TSUN then DERE.

As Shiki goes into the end game, I want to make a few predictions. First of all, I feel that while there were some easy pickings at the end of the episode, the majority of the shiki are still in hiding in the mountains. While the villagers waste time smashing furniture the day will quickly pass and soon  it will be night. Inevitably people will go home to sleep (there was never a plan of ‘meet back at the shrine and oh… bring some religious artifacts with you to protect yourselves guys!’ speech from Toshio, so I think once night comes people will die in droves.

Not only that, but the Shiki will suck the blood out of some of the most prominent supporters of the attack and hypnotize them to turn against their commarades and sap their morale. There will be some touching moments such as Megumi’s dad seeing Megumi and not being able to fight her, and the inevitable reunion of an alive Akira with his older sister. By and large, the final battle in probably involve some epic fight between Toshio, Tatsumi and Natsuno, with Toshio finally confronting Seishin and Sunako and perhaps either having to kill Seishin or get him to kill Sunako. And of course once the ‘head vampire’ is killed, the show will end.

Well that’s my prediction anyway.

P.S. Does anyone else think that the Shiki OP sounds like a Gundam OP?

Criticism: You’re doing it wrong

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

Melinda Beasi here, filling in for Brigid this week, along with Manga Critic Kate Dacey.

Yesterday’s most overtly provocative voice comes from Noah Berlatsky at The Hooded Utilitarian, who wraps up his discussion of Moto Hagio’s A Drunken Dream and Other Stories by Criticizing the Critics. He describes the piece on The Comics Journal front page as “discussing critical reaction to the work, and what it reveals about the limits of the manga blogosphere.”

In the article, he calls out manga bloggers in general (and by name) to criticize their approach to Hagio’s work, characterizing it as “almost completely useless.” Though much of the comment thread so far comes from the usual HU crowd, it’s worth scrolling down for a reaction from Kate Dacey, who has effectively verbalized what many of us are feeling this morning.

On the topic of new releases, Danielle Leigh expresses excitement over the release of Osamu Tezuka’s Ayako, while David Welsh and Kate Dacey share their thoughts on what’s shipping this week.

Speaking of Tezuka, Scott McCloud waxes nostalgic in his blog about his early love for the father of manga (link via Journalista).

David Welsh reports in on day three of the One Piece Manga Moveable Feast, coupled with a timely announcement from ANN, reporting that the series has taken the top five spots in Japan’s 2010 comics rankings.

The Beat shares more details on Dark Horse Comics’ new digital program, announced earlier this fall at New York Comic Con.

At Manga Life, the Nibley sisters take a moment to give thanks in their latest Words of Truth and Wisdom.

News from Japan: ANN reports on Japan’s top selling manga for the year, both by series and by volume (1 | 2).

Reviews: At The Manga Report, Anna takes a quick look at three Viz Signature series, 20th Century Boys, Children of the Sea, and Detroit Metal City. Deb Aoki offers up ten mini reviews at About.com, including an early look at Fumi Yoshinaga’s Not Love But Delicious Foods.

Lissa Pattillo on vol. 1 of Demon Sacred (ANN)
Snow Wildsmith on vol. 1 of Grand Guignol Orchestra (Good Comics for Kids)
