Is Dragon Ball Z Kai on the Verge of Ending?

Sunday, March 27th, 2011

They say that everything good has an expiry date on itself, and Dragon Ball Z Kai is no exception. Speculations are rife that the series might end, much earlier than expected.

031011 1127 IsDragonBal1 Is Dragon Ball Z Kai on the Verge of Ending?

According to credible sources, the culmination of the adrenaline-pumping adventures of Dragon Ball Z Kai is not too far away. The reason for that is being quoted as a drop in sales figure of the franchise (in Japan). In addition to that, rumors are in circulation that Kai’s slot will be offered to another show titled ‘Toriko’.

A sudden drop in sales figure does not always reflect a permanent trend. There is always a hope that things may be back to normal, especially when a show is as engaging as Dragon Ball Z Kai.

The revamped Dragon Ball Z Kai series has been leveraging the popularity of Japanese station Fuji TV, since April 2009. Later, Funimation decided to present the dubbed version of the show to the American audience, a decision which was followed by expected profits.

In America, the show has been running on Nicktoons since May 2010.

Considering the international acceptability of Dragon Ball Z Kai, the franchise might offer it a well-deserved long run on television.

In nutshell, although clouds threatening the premature ending of Dragon Ball Z Kai are hovering, there is much hope for its complete run.

The animation has to stay on, for it involves fast-paced screenplay. Its three piece theme music has also rubbed captivating magic on the minds of the viewers. With cutting-edge technology and inclusion of more frames, the series has added entertainment to the offer, for viewers.

After reading all this, the forecasters should have only one thing to say about its premature ending: ‘No Way!’

Catching up after C2E2

Thursday, March 24th, 2011

Hey all! Sorry about the extended internet silence—I didn’t disappear, but I spent the weekend at C2E2 and the past few days writing up all my panel reports, so it has been a busy time. If you want to know how it went, check out my C2E2 con report at Graphic Novel Reporter, my overview of the kids’ and teen’s comics scene at PWCW, and my writeup of the State of the Comicsphere panel at CBR. And I took some pictures, too.

The big manga news of the weekend, of course, was the return of Sailor Moon, and the Manga Bookshelf bloggers (and frequent guest Michelle Smith) devoted a roundtable to why that is so awesome. They also took some time out to discuss their candidates for Pick of the Week.

David Welsh, The Manga Curmudgeon, asks his readers who are their favorite hard-working manga characters, and he also checks out this week’s new manga and reaches the letter H in his Josei Alphabet.

Sean Gaffney also takes a look at the week’s new releases as well as Kodansha’s September lineup.

Melinda Beasi reports from inside the Digital Manga Guild, where things have been quiet except for the announcement that DMP has signed 487 books for the fan-translation service, although they would not reveal any of the titles.

Reviews: Melanie checks out an interesting selection of recent releases at About Heroes. Kate Dacey posts short takes on her recent reading at The Manga Critic. Ash Brown files the weekly manga report at Experiments in Manga. Other reviews of note:

Sean Gaffney on vol. 1 of Aqua (A Case Suitable for Treatment)
Anna on vol. 1 of Beast Master (Manga Report)
Ken Haley on vol. 1 of The Beautiful Skies of Houhou High (Sequential Ink)
David Welsh on vol. 1 of Blue Exorcist (The Manga Curmudgeon)
Snow Wildsmith on vol. 1 of Butterfly (ICv2)

Usage of Images to reassure!

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011

The impact of news on the Japanese earthquake and tsunami may have been getting slightly overwhelming to people, as they go on their lives. However the Japanese entertainment, and anime industry has not been stopping, although images some may lead people to agree, question, or think about how their intention is perceived as. Nothing can turn back the time to this reality, so how can people cope though?

These are only a small bit of images or news that has me thinking on their impact. Whether you think this is a positive or negative image, please take it as it is. Don’t think anything less that would possibly belittle the efforts/attempts that these images/people have.

For the first image of Full Metal Panic‘s Tessa, in a news that was shared by ANN. As an individual, and a fan of this series, I was happy to see and hear of what these Japanese industry people are doing. Yukana-Tessa’s anime seiyuu, Shoji Gatoh-FMP’s light novel author, and Shikidouji-light novel illustrator, completed those additional art work.

Second image is this representation from Arashi’s leader. Satoshi Ohno has recently starred in a Japanese drama that has adapted Fujiko Fujio’s Kaibutsu-kun manga and anime. Of course, what Ohno as Kaibutsu-kun said is intended for the kids in Japan. I am thinking about Blues Clues at this moment. >_<

Third image is from a picture shared on Twitter, of a mascot campaign. Japan has plenty of mascots, so would you feel comfortable looking at an image like this? Whether or not this is a confirmed image so, in the end a reality is quite clear, communication by an image speaks of a 1000 words. Do people feel more comfortable in knowing how images are created, and shared? On perhaps a positive note, two Fukushima reactors has been stopped safety.

OH HOW I WISH I WERE THAT LAPTOP

Summary:

Somehow I think no skirt, no boob, Lego-hair Wako just isn't going to cut it for Sugata's refined tastes

It’s Sunday practice again as Takuto and Sugata spar in his dojo. This time Sugata decides to up the ante by offering Takuto Wako forever if he wins the duel. Needless to say an energized Takuto manages to ‘technically win’ but Sugata counters that because he did not deliver the finishing blow, it wasn’t valid.

During breakfast that morning, a mysterious package arrives for Sugata, which turns out to be a present and painting of a more sinister looking Sugata from Reiji. As everyone debates the significance of the painting, Sugata mentions that he may have met Takuto’s dad except that he looks younger than he really is, possibly his first phase power.

With that Sugata turns to more important matters, as he tells Takuto that if he really wants to protect Wako he has to be prepared for anything as Sugata asks her out on a date.

Isn't it usually the girl that closes their eyes?

On their date, Sugata and Wako walk around the city and eventually end up at a cafe together where Sugata teases her as he pretends to kiss her but holds off at the last second.

Meanwhile, George and Tetsuya discuss whether or not they really should remain members of Kiraboshi if they could not be drivers, to which they decide that they will stick it out as long as Benio does to protect her as her knights.

I think there's something on your face… oh right MY FIST

As Takuto sulks around the city Wako-less for the day, he runs into Reiji who pretends to not know him. Takuto responds with his long-awaited punch to the face as he realizes instantly who Reiji really is after all.

After Sugata and Wako’s date, Wako meets up with Takuto and it is during then that zero time begins. Instead of one driver, Takuto is confronted with three of Banishing Age’s drivers whom all attack him at once. While Takuto puts up a good fight he cannot fight three on one, but is finally saved by Sugata who joins Takuto inside Tauburn to use his Tau missle ability as he takes out all three Banishing Age drivers in one go. Takuto and Wako are amazed by Sugata’s ability as Sugata gives Keito a longing stare in Zero Time after the battle is won. It appears in a flashback and Keito has let Sugata know her real identity after her attempt at UPPING HIS LIBIDO the night before.

Just in case you idiots can't figure out who I am, I'm going to introduce myself WITHOUT a mask to start off with

Meanwhile at Kiraboshi headquarters, everyone is gathered for a meeting but no one knows what’s going on. Suddenly through the floor appears the King of Kiraboshi – Sugata accompanied by Keito as his side.

Reaction:

So basically they completely wasted the previous episode as this was just a rehash of it all. The previous episode saw Sugata play a character which loved Wako’s character, but ultimately abandons her to gain more power, while Takuto’s character decides to stick with Wako’s character out of love. This episode saw Sugata basically spend an extended amount of time saying goodbye to his fiance and leaving her to Takuto as he decides to join Kiraboshi in the end for his much more busty companion. They might as well just skipped the previous episode and added more original plot… but I digress.

So in the end we confirm what was obvious but also run into a bit of a surprise. While it was obvious that Sugata would always abandon Wako and she would be paired up with Takuto, what was a bit of a surprise was that Sugata actually ended up with a girl. And a MUCH MORE busty girl at that. I for one am impressed at good ol’ Sugata for not falling into the easy yaoi stereotype. I really hope though that the Keito thing works out and he’s not just using her.

It was also not much of a surprise that Sugata would eventually end up with Kiraboshi. The entire series has been hinting at how Takuto eventually needs to KILL someone to end it all, and with Evil Sugata a bunch of episodes back, it was obvious that his eventual opponent would be Sugata. Whether or not the series will end up letting Takuto win by preserving his ‘no kill Kira Yamato’ policy remains to be seen.

One interesting note is that considering how absolutely useless Takuto (among others) are at recognizing people while they are in their Kiraboshi costumes, he sure recognized his dad easily. I guess even though they look completely different in the anime, in ‘real life’ they look similar enough that it’s a no brainer even for no brain Takuto!

Finally, I was glad that the Kiraboshi guys finally decided to use some brains and attack Takuto 3on1. Unfortunately for them, they could not beat the power of the DEUS EX MACHINA and they got their asses kicked.

Overall, this was a pretty boring episode. I mean the fight was okay, but it felt like everything was just a huge rehash from what we already knew. With only three episodes remaining, I’m worried that this series will not pace itself well and end badly.
