LOL wut. Oh man, this is getting pretty social commentary now isn’t it? But seriously, teh bloody fuck how they made that Genomic Resonance Counter thing and Tsugumi just had to conveniently pick it up from the terrorists last week who conveniently already have it somehow but no idea how the fuck to use and she conveniently manages to figure out the exact thing it was. They really have horrible composition skills.

Man, I sure didn’t expect Haruka to join the dark side. She does know her own son is trapped in there and she’s helping the same people trying to kill him… right?

Lots of Tsugumi this week, which makes me very very happy.

Oh man, her Void. Or more like how she pulls it out.

Well, this episode is probably the most decent yet so far since…. the episode where Haruka got introduced? Still that isn’t saying much, but I will grudgingly admit Shu finally did something on his own accord this week.

Still I’m not liking how the show is going with the “convenient” magic tool that allows Void powers to be ranked. I mean, the whole time we’ve been shown Voids as some kind of plot hax that allows the characters to conveniently bypass certain obstacles or give them some magic ability so it feels kinda stupid to suddenly have a tool that “conveniently” spits out a numerical figure to rank them. And then Shu’s giving in to Yahiro’s “help” with his governance of the school. Not a very good idea when he’s a backstabbing, drug-pushing psychopath. Really, Shu, you have shitty taste in friends.

Oh well, no point griping about it since Shu’s still fucking retarded after all, even if he can pull off some cool stunts. I’m sure allowing Yahiro to run shit for him is going to backfire gloriously soon enough. In fact, the next episode preview has a shot of Shu lying on the ground all beaten up and shit. I’m going to prep a nice bottle for next week’s episode…

Summary: 

Natsume opens the door for who he believes to be Touko, but this actually turns out to be a spirit in disguise. This yokai first attempts to assault Natsume for the Book of Friends, but when fended off, he instead attempts to reason for it. Wanting to call out a a yokai named Karikami, the spirit Yobiko tells the story about a woman he had observed in the past. The girl named Yoko would happily meet a man named Takahiko daily, but as the man seemed very busy, he would leave soon after speaking with her for just a bit. The spirit does not finish the story immediately, instead falling asleep in Natsume’s room for the night.

The next day, Yobiko decides to take Natsume with him to find the Karikami. When the group is attacked by a lower spirit, Yobiko realizes that the Karikami may appear if Natsume makes the Yuujinchou’s presence apparent. Natsume agrees to be bait for Yobiko, but only if he would finish telling him his reasons for needing to meet Karikami. With this, Yobiko does so: Takahiko eventually stopped appearing, and when Yobiko investigated the matter, he discovered that Takahiko had become married. Unable to watch Yoko’s sadness, having become attached to her, he pretended to be Takahiko. He had started to feel more and more guilty as time went on, however, and eventually had to reveal that the truth to her. Yobiko went on a long journey after that, but upon returning to Yoko’s old meeting place, he found a letter in its location. As the letter is quite old, it would need to be restored for him to read it.

Natsume and Yobiko are finally able to find the Karikami, who agrees to restore the letter in exchange for his name. It is then revealed, of course, that Yoko has long left the world. Yobiko states that he plans to return to his original location in order to protect it, before having Natsume read Yoko’s letter. Yobiko expects perhaps words of sorrow or anger, but as Natsume discovers, she simply wanted to thank him for telling her the truth.

Oh, how we missed you!

Reaction: 

It’s episodes like this that remind me why this is one of my all time favorite shows. I am definitely one to argue that Japan’s ability to create slice of life stories is one of the best in the world. The strength such a simple story about the meeting between a yokai and human can have is just mind blowing to me, though at the end of the day, the yokai are just a medium for telling stories about people. Listening to Yobiko’s tale, I could only wonder what he thought while watching Yoko’s loneliness. How must he have felt while deceiving her for pure reasons, and what kind of fear and anxiety must he have had held before discovering the letter’s contents? And of course, also being reminded of Reiko, what must it be like knowing that her existence was a mere passing when compared to his? It may be strange to some people to be able to feel such power from such simple storytelling, but I suppose those types don’t last this far into the series.

Outside of the main tale, we also got more hints of Natsume’s strength towards the beginning of the episode. I suppose Nyanko-sensei’s mistimed arrivals are acceptable when Natsume can uppercut his way out of trouble (“Open this jar!”). Finally seeing Reiko again, even only for a brief moment, had me shouting in joy as well. With next week looking like one that dwells into Natsume’s past, as hinted by the OP, it’s time to start getting really hype for this season of Natsume.
